Hosea Hosea: the prophet's marriage to Gomer as a picture of God's faithful, redeeming love for an unfaithful people. Joel Joel: the locust plague, the day of the Lord, and the promise that God will pour out his Spirit and sons and daughters will prophesy. Amos Amos, the shepherd prophet of justice: 'let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream'. Obadiah Obadiah, the shortest book of the Old Testament: judgment on Edom, the descendants of Esau, for its pride and violence against Judah. Jonah Jonah: the prophet who ran from God, the great fish, Nineveh's repentance and a God whose mercy reaches Israel's enemies. Micah Micah: judgment and hope, Bethlehem as the birthplace of a ruler, and the call to do justice, love mercy and walk humbly with God. Nahum Nahum: the prophecy of the fall of Nineveh and Assyria, God's vengeance on oppressors and his refuge for those who trust him. Habakkuk Habakkuk: a prophet's questions about injustice and evil, and the answer that the righteous shall live by faith. Zephaniah Zephaniah: the coming day of the Lord that sweeps the whole earth, and a God who rejoices over his people with singing. Haggai Haggai: the call to rebuild the temple after the exile, and the promise of a greater glory to come. Zechariah Zechariah: night visions, the messianic king coming on a donkey, and prophecies about Jerusalem and the Mount of Olives. Malachi Malachi, the last book of the Old Testament: faithful worship, bringing the whole tithe into the storehouse, and the promised return of Elijah. Matthew The Gospel of Matthew: Jesus' genealogy and birth, the Sermon on the Mount and the Beatitudes, the parables and the Great Commission. Mark The Gospel of Mark, the shortest Gospel: a fast-moving account of Jesus' ministry, miracles, suffering and resurrection. Luke The Gospel of Luke: the Christmas story, the Magnificat, the Good Samaritan, the Prodigal Son and Jesus' care for the outcast. John The Gospel of John: the Word made flesh, John 3:16, the 'I am' sayings, the raising of Lazarus and Jesus' farewell to his disciples. Acts The Acts of the Apostles: Pentecost, the early church in Jerusalem, Stephen, Paul's conversion and his missionary journeys. Romans Paul's letter to the Romans: sin and grace, justification by faith, Romans 8, and Romans 13 on governing authorities. 1 Corinthians 1 Corinthians: unity in a divided church, spiritual gifts and tongues, the Lord's Supper, the love chapter and the resurrection. 2 Corinthians 2 Corinthians: Paul's defense of his ministry, comfort in suffering, the new creation, generous giving and the thorn in the flesh. Galatians Galatians: freedom in Christ, faith rather than circumcision and the works of the law, and the fruit of the Spirit such as self-control. Ephesians Ephesians: grace through faith, one body in Christ, marriage and the household, and the armor of God. Philippians Philippians, Paul's letter of joy: Christ's humility, contentment in every circumstance and 'I can do all things through Christ'. Colossians Colossians: the supremacy of Christ over all things, and the new life of those who set their minds on things above. 1 Thessalonians 1 Thessalonians: encouragement for a young church, holy living, and the return of Christ and the gathering of believers. 2 Thessalonians 2 Thessalonians: the day of the Lord, the man of lawlessness often read as the Antichrist, and staying faithful while waiting for Christ. 1 Timothy 1 Timothy: guidance for church leaders, the qualifications of elders and deacons, the roles of women and the love of money. 2 Timothy 2 Timothy, Paul's last letter: all Scripture is God-breathed, enduring hardship and finishing the race. Titus Titus: appointing elders and church leaders in Crete, sound teaching, and grace that trains believers for good works. Philemon Philemon: Paul's appeal for the runaway slave Onesimus, and the letter's place in debates about forgiveness and slavery. Jude Jude: contending for the faith against false teachers, with its famous quotation from the Book of Enoch. Revelation The Book of Revelation: John's visions, the letters to seven churches, the beast and Armageddon, and the new heaven and new earth.
