Creating a Spiritual Calendar | Aish
4+ week, 1+ hour ago (326+ words) We all rely on calendars. Our schedules correspond to them. We use them to record important dates, to mark appointments, and to remember meaningful occasions. Our weekly, monthly, and yearly calendars fill up. How many of us, however, are equally aware of our "spiritual calendars? Our Sages relate that every physical phenomenon has a corresponding spiritual parallel. Just as we account for physical time, so too, we should become accountable for the spiritual content infusing the moments of our lives. The quality of our spiritual lives can be measured within its own unique context. The Zohar describes how each day in a person's life has its own challenge and mission. Benjamin Franklin's oft-quoted saying "Don't put off for tomorrow what you can do today applies to spiritual and personal growth as well as to physical tasks. Maximizing one's potential starts…...

Your Environment Shapes You | Aish
4+ day, 5+ hour ago (315+ words) Your children are impacted by their surroundings. Choose wisely. They hadn't. The decision was about business, not culture. Yet once we unpacked what college life in America actually looks like, especially at secular liberal arts colleges, it became clear that the world they were considering was far different from the one they knew. In Australia, university is academic, largely commuter-based, and campus culture is minimal. In the United States, college is a full ecosystem that does more than educate. It shapes and often indoctrinates. Professors once taught students how to think. Now many teach them what to think. Professors once taught students how to think. Now many teach them what to think. Today's campuses do not simply lean left. They often operate as ideological monocultures. Ideas once debated are now declared. Traditions, religious values, and objective morality are treated not…...

Growing Throughout Life | Aish
3+ week, 34+ min ago (369+ words) Oftentimes, we examine our lives through the "rear view mirror" of missed opportunities. We second-guess ourselves, reverting to self-doubt and recrimination. We can be plagued by thoughts of what we could have or should have done. The problem is, to quote Kierkegaard, that "life can only be understood backwards, but it must be lived forwards." Retroactively, one's later years of spiritual growth can elevate one's earlier years of lesser spiritual standing. Another striking contrast between the roles of Abraham and Sarah is found in the significance of their names. We are taught that one's Hebrew name expresses his or her spiritual essence and calling. In fact, the central letters of the Hebrew word neshamah, soul, are shin and mem, which spell the word shem, name. Rebbe Nachman of Breslov translates the term "World to Come" as "the world that is…...

Menorah in Tabernacle – No Measurements | Aish
2+ week, 4+ day ago (270+ words) Ask the Rabbi > The Bible > Oral Law & Torah Study > Oral Law " General I noticed that when the Torah describes the Menorah in the Mishkan (Tabernacle), it makes no mention of its height and width. This is very different from the Mishkan itself and its other vessels, for which the Torah gives very precise dimensions. Why is this? One possible explanation is that the Torah itself was not particular about the Menorah's exact size. The only requirement was the amount of gold to be used for it, but beyond that, the exact dimensions were not significant. Perhaps, however, this contains a deeper message. Several authorities explain that the Menorah symbolizes the Oral Law " the parts of the Torah not written down in the Torah itself but taught orally by Moses to the nation. (See e.g., Rabbeinu Bachya Exodus 27:10; Pachad Yitzchak 6:4.) Such works…...
