Pretrial hearing for Luigi Mangione to resume Monday after court releases new evidence in case

just now (281+ words) NEW YORK -- Accused CEO killer Luigi Mangione is due back in court on Monday for the resumption of his pretrial hearing as a judge weighs whether or not key evidence can be used in his murder trial. The hearing stems from evidence seized after Mangione's arrest. Mangione's lawyers say items were taken before he was read his rights. There's also a Greyhound bus ticket issued to Sam Dawson, which is one of multiple aliases that prosecutors say Mangione used. Mangione allegedly told officers during his arrest that his name was Mark Rosario, matching a fake New Jersey driver's license. During his pretrial hearing, Mangione's attorneys are challenging the way the evidence was obtained, trying to get it thrown out of court ahead of his murder trial. His lawyers want the ghost gun and journal found in his backpack thrown out....

Russian strikes kill 1 as US and Ukraine officials wrap up third day of diplomatic talks

4+ min ago (382+ words) Russian missile, drone and shelling attacks overnight and Sunday killed at least three people in Ukraine, after U.S. and Ukrainian officials wrapped up a third day of talks aimed at ending the war. Kremenchuk is home to one of Ukraine's biggest oil refineries and is an industrial hub. Kyiv and its Western allies say Russia is trying to cripple the Ukrainian power grid and deny civilians access to heat, light and running water for a fourth consecutive winter, in what Ukrainian officials call "weaponizing" the cold. Two people were killed and seven others wounded Sunday in shelling by Russian troops in Ukraine's Kharkiv…...

Not All Targeted Killings Are the Same. Hegseth’s Boat Strikes Are Illegal.

16+ min ago (434+ words) With its strikes on suspected drug couriers in the Caribbean, our government is conducting extrajudicial killings on the high seas " plain and simple. Some Americans may wonder how this is any different from the targeted killings of other bad guys around the world by previous administrations, including that of Barack Obama, in which I served. There is a world of legal and moral differences. First, President Trump has effectively unilaterally declared war against Mexican and Venezuelan drug cartels, without authorization from Congress. In contrast, following the Sept. 11 attacks, Congress authorized President George W. Bush and his successors to treat terrorist members of Al Qaeda as enemy combatants in war and to use lethal military force against them. Our military's new precision weaponry allows for targeted lethal force with the single tap of a device. But that capability should never become a…...
