Buddhist monks resume 2,300-mile walk for peace after accident near Houston

1+ week, 1+ day ago (437+ words) By JUAN A. LOZANO The collection of about two dozen monks began their walk on Oct. 26 from Fort Worth, Texas, to "raise awareness of peace, loving kindness, and compassion across America and the world," according to the group, Walk for Peace. The monks planned to travel through 10 states before reaching Washington, D.C. So far, the monks have visited various Texas cities on their trek, including Austin and Houston, often walking along roads and highways while being escorted by law enforcement or by a vehicle trailing behind them, said Long Si Dong, a spokesperson for the group. The monks are being accompanied on their journey by their dog Aloka. At around 6:13 p.m. Wednesday, the monks were walking along the side of U.S. Highway 90 near Dayton, Texas, about 40 miles (64 kilometers) northeast of Houston, when their escort vehicle, which had its hazard lights on, was hit by…...

Venice revives a quarter-mile floating bridge to island cemetery for All Souls’ Day mourners

3+ week, 6+ day ago (494+ words) By NICCOL" LUPONE and LUCA BRUNO The city of Venice this year revived a long-dormant tradition of constructing a temporary bridge to allow Venetians to make the solemn 400-meter (quarter-mile) lagoon crossing by foot to pay respects to their dead on the Catholic All Souls" holiday. In its original form, the crossing was made out of Venetian "peata" boats lashed together, topped with walking planks and anchored to the lagoon bed. The practice was stopped in the 1950s, probably as more regular public water buses made the island easier to reach. After an absence of some seven decades, the bridge was revived in 2019 with a modular pontoon construction, but the COVID-19 pandemic interrupted plans to make it an annual fixture " until this year. "We have proposed it once more so we can reconnect history with living people," Mayor Luigi Brugnaro said…...

Opinion: Giving thanks for silver linings this Thanksgiving

6+ day, 11+ hour ago (228+ words) It is something of a ritual for people of faith to go around the Thanksgiving table giving thanks for something other than the excessive amount of food they are about to consume. These are usually hurried personal recitals with all eyes on the cooling meal. But occasionally, we manage to reach beyond ourselves and give thanks for something that impacts others. The joined Norwich parishes of St Mary's, mostly Haitian, and St. Peter and Paul, mostly white, are working together to help a Haitian mother who has fought back from extreme illness and disability to live in her own home with her son. The churches have committed to continue to support and protect her in every way possible. As The Lord's Pantry at St. James Church in New London struggles to meet the increasing need for food distribution, pantry administrators…...

Quakers at a glance: A look at the faith’s beliefs and the tradition of activism and silent worship

4+ week, 1+ day ago (268+ words) By LUIS ANDRES HENAO Many visitors don't know about the Quakers' faith. But in recent years, attendance has been surging. The Arch Street Meeting House Preservation Trust has used exhibits, technology and social media to help teach others about Quakers and the meeting house that was built in the early 19th century. It is still one of the world's largest and most important Quaker buildings. Here's a look at the faith's beliefs and history " and some common misconceptions about it. Quakers marry in a self-uniting ceremony without an officiant. Couples observe silence that is only broken when they exchange their vows. At the end, guests sign, as witnesses, a marriage certificate. Historically, Quakers have been involved in peaceful protests to end wars and slavery, and support women's voting rights in line with their commitment to justice and peace. Earlier this year,…...
