Redlands Area Interfaith Council to host interfaith Thanksgiving celebration

The community is invited to attend the program, at 4 p.m. at Redlands First United Methodist Church, 1 E. Olive Ave. "With Grateful Hearts United" is the theme of this year's celebration, which includes participants from various faiths. A trombone ensemble will welcome those attending the celebration, and John Doty will direct a choir of singers from multiple faiths, according to a news release from Redlands Area Interfaith Council. Matters of Faith: Redlands interfaith community celebrates Thanksgiving with ‘grateful hearts’

This year's theme, "With Grateful Hearts United," wove throughout the musical selections, readings, and keynote address. Prelude music was provided by the Bone Zone trombone ensemble under Paul Fults' direction. John Doty directed a combined choir and played the organ. Tina Skousen directed the children's choir accompanied by Janelle Carlson on piano. The Rev. Dr. Darrel Wesley welcomed everyone to the Redlands First United Methodist Church. As the annual festival of Thanksgiving draws near, Americans are preparing to consume about 46 million turkeys, which amounts to about 21% of the national production of the birds. Today the Thanksgiving holiday is associated very strongly with the turkey, although historians disagree about whether or not that species of bird actually adorned the first Thanksgiving table. We know that both Native Americans and colonists certainly hunted them and so it seems likely turkey was there in those first thanksgiving meals, along with a number of other foods. Much credit must be given to Sarah Josepha Hale, who lived from 1778 to 1879 for promoting both Thanksgiving and the turkey. Hale was the daughter of a Revolutionary War veteran who over time became a poet and later became the editor of Godey's Lady Book, a highly popular women's magazine....
Salvation Army seeks volunteer bell ringers for Red Kettle Campaign

Funds raised during the campaign help provide food baskets, toys and more during the holiday season.
