Operation Christmas Child collection week kicks off

Every year, National Collection Week takes place the third week in November with more than 4,500 dropoff locations open across the country. Parishioners say goodbye to SS. Peter & Paul

Appropriately, the date was also All Souls Day, a time of remembrance for family and friends who are no longer with us. Parishioners recalled the numerous baptisms, weddings, festivals and school graduations at the Covington Street church on the city's North Side. The first Mass of the newly-created SS. Peter and Paul Church was on July 2, 1911, in a small house on the corner of Covington and Arlington streets. Local Croatian and Slovenian immigrants gathered from Youngstown and nearby towns to worship. The present brick church on Covington Street was dedicated in 1915. Diocese issues decree on funeral visitation at churches

More families are requesting funeral visitation for loved ones at church rather than at funeral homes. Bishop David Bonnar said the increasing trend can be attributed to several factors, including convenience, cutting cost and making it easier for family and friends to attend all parts of the funeral rites. Over the past year, Bonnar has met with funeral directors, the Diocesan Presbyteral Council and county deans, in hopes of establishing a uniform policy for funeral visitations. Ultimately, with their unanimous support, it has been decided that funeral visitation will no longer be allowed in a church building or church facility.
