Reading group to become weekly event at The Hive

1+ hour, 37+ min ago (211+ words) The adult reading group at The Hive will go weekly in December, as one of the most famous Christmas stories of all time is brought to life. Books Aloud usually meets on the last Wednesday of each month. A short story is chosen, read aloud to the group, and then discussed together. Amanda Bonnick, who runs the sessions, said: "Books Aloud is a place where you can bring a coffee, kick back, and just listen. "There's a chance to chat at the end of each session, so you can meet fellow story enthusiasts, or you can just let it sink in quietly." "We're really excited to be serialising A Christmas Carol throughout December, so we'll be meeting weekly and this will let the heartwarming, famous story permeate your Christmas preparations." Stephanie Jones, manager of The Hive, added: "Books Aloud is…...

Help me find this SF book

2+ hour, 7+ min ago (118+ words) Hi all! This question is in honor of a relative who recommended me this book. Can you help me find it again? All I can remember is human computers. What I remember about the book: It was science fiction. There were human computers (at the time I didn't know that human computers had been a thing and was really impressed by the concept) There were competing kingdoms or something that had harnessed the power of computers to some extent. There were some kind of relay towers to transmit information. I remember the main characters being powerful and female? It wasn't a particularly old book. Probably 80s or later. Any ideas? Thank you. Help me find this SF book...

Book Box: Inside the Silk Road Slippers Writing Masterclass in Marrakech

2+ hour, 50+ min ago (374+ words) The thing about literary masterclasses is you have to give value " real value," says Alexandra Pringle, former Editor-in-Chief of Bloomsbury, in the authoritative tone of a woman who has spent decades publishing Nobel prizewinners like Abdulrazak Gurnah and bestsellers like Eat, Pray, Love. So what's not to swoon over? Rather a lot, it appears. A few days into the program we compare notes " the only man on the course, a Swiss investor who wants to be a writer, and me. On Monday night I was ready to leave," says the serious-faced finance man. Me too," I echo, nodding vigorously. I suppose I can give it all up and turn to planting lettuce and tomatoes in Manali," I tell myself after a bruising read-aloud of my story synopsis to a table full of people who look faintly puzzled and give me…...

Santa Cruz | Megha Majumdar explores climate threat through dual narrative in new book

12+ hour, 24+ min ago (1033+ words) SANTA CRUZ " Having grown up in Kolkata, India, author Megha Majumdar said she has seen the impacts of climate change firsthand, and she has continued to monitor those impacts even as she moved to the United States. "I was reading about the future of that city because it is one of the cities in the world which is most severely affected by climate change," she said. "It has grown hotter, and it is predicted to see more storms. Reading about that made me wonder about the lived experience of those effects of climate change." Majumdar's love of writing stemmed from her lifelong love of reading which had a profound effect on her life. Growing up in India, English was not her first language " her family spoke Bengali " but in her kindergarten class, she had to learn English. "I was actually…...

Crime fiction: 10 little Christmas murders, death in punkish New York, and the perfect ending

18+ hour, 27+ min ago (491+ words) There aren't many books exactly like Natasha Bache's 12 Ways To Kill Your Family at Christmas (One More Chapter, "9.99). It's a holiday murder mystery, set at a snowed-in manor home, where " a prologue reveals " 10 people die, one by one. True, that set-up is familiar, but the writing is less so: few holiday mysteries go quite so gleefully over the top. After a long evening endured only with much Champagne, the visit truly goes off the rails: Jeannie and her husband, George, announce they've changed their wills, disinheriting Miles and several others. Is it any wonder people begin dying? The murders begin unsuspiciously when George falls while hanging Christmas lights. As things escalate, the deaths quickly leave ordinary far behind. Soon, the family's snowed in, the police seem helpless, and everyone's a suspect. Though Bache eventually reveals a plausibly surprising culprit, much…...

The Queer Books NPR Loved This Year

23+ hour, 31+ min ago (181+ words) Here are the queer books that made it onto NPR's Books We Love list, from Actress of a Certain Age to When They Burned the Butterfly. Danika spends most of their time talking about sapphic books at the'Lesbrary. View All posts by Danika Ellis My search for the queer books on the Best Books of the Year lists continues! This time, I combed through NPR's staggering 384-title "Books We Love" list. I found about 30 queer books included, which isn't a ton comparatively, but it's still interesting to see what they did pick. As always, this is not a foolproof system: it's just me browsing through the list and noting the queer books I know of. It's very likely I missed some! I also decided to include the tags NPR gave each title. You can filter their list by tag, but…...
