1+ hour, 13+ min ago (1255+ words) Selena Flores, 27, says she was always tired while working night shifts. But she has young children " ages 3, 5 and 7, the youngest of whom recently started preschool " so switching to working daytime hours meant she and her husband needed a child care option for after school. Recently, Flores got a job as an administrator at a restaurant in Naperville, she explained. And it was an after-school program at West Aurora School District run by the Fox Valley Park District that helped her manage the job switch. "My life did a full 180," Flores said about her change in work. ‘Nousferatu’: Notorious consultants paid £750k by Scottish university amid huge cuts

1+ hour, 43+ min ago (1440+ words) THE University of Edinburgh has quietly paid more than "750,000 to a controversial consulting firm, fuelling suspicion it is helping bosses shape budget cuts that could see hundreds of jobs go. The money was paid to Nous Group, which specialises in advising universities but has developed an ominous reputation in the higher education sector. Academics have dubbed it "Nousferatu" " a nod to the silent movie vampire " because they say its arrival often ushers in reductions in staff and courses. Documents obtained by The Ferret show Nous and "related entities" have advised the university on everything from disability services to digital strategy. Edinburgh's spending on the company has spiked in 2025, while at the same time it announced it was facing a "financial gap" and was seeking savings which the University and College Union (UCU) says could see 1800 people lose their jobs. More…...

My Three Years Wasted by University — LessWrong

3+ hour ago (812+ words) As I mentioned in my previous articles, I learned a lot of bullshit during my time at university. This is by no means an isolated case, but a widespread phenomenon. Where Our Engineering Education Went Wrong " LessWrong Chinese universities are wasting students" time on a massive scale. Quite a few students have already awakened to this reality and are stepping forward to point it out. The author of today"s article, like me, is a computer science student. And just like him, what I have learned from working far exceeds what I learned from university. I hope our experiences can serve as a wake-up call for more university students. I haven't written a new article in over two weeks, but today, rather than talking about technology, I want to talk about the three years of my life that were wasted…...

Offshore and out of touch? The curly questions confronting Australian universities overseas

4+ hour, 43+ min ago (572+ words) Arbitrary detention, grossly unfair trials, enshrined discrimination against women, the death penalty: human rights groups say that this is Saudi Arabia today. Authorities there are now working closely with the University of Wollongong to open its latest and arguably most ambitious international campus in the Saudi capital, Riyadh. The University of Wollongong will join Arizona State University, University of Strathclyde, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and IE University in Riyadh. Credit: Getty Images "UoW is the first foreign university to receive a Saudi Investment Licence under the country's Vision 2030 program, reflecting our reputation as a trusted global education partner," the university said. Regulatory hurdles have delayed the campus's opening, which was set for mid-2025. English courses will now begin next year, with undergraduate degrees to follow from 2027. The university says its fees will be in line with local expectations " courses…...

LETTER: A story about grade inflation

8+ hour, 12+ min ago (228+ words) What will the universities do about it? Mike Obstgarten's "Academic fraud: Grade inflation is a scourge that must be eradicated" (Nov. 23 commentary) reminded me of a midterm grade I received my first semester in college. It was an easy course, and I was doing well, so the C-plus was a surprise. I even confronted the professor, who explained that his midterm grades were meant to be "motivational." Setting the bar as low as it can go. No excuses: Open your hearts. They use the roads, too. One way to improve housing affordability. Universal health care has been debated in the US for more than 40 years, but it is never voted on because both parties accept campaign donations from the for-profit insurance companies to maintain the status quo. Some of the worst atrocities in history were committed by men in uniform…...
