Fisheries dept busts illegal African catfish farming in Ujani wetland; 2.4 tonnes seized
14+ hour, 12+ min ago (290+ words) In one of the biggest crackdowns on banned aquaculture in recent years, the Maharashtra fisheries department has seized 2.4 tonnes of African catfish illegally farmed in the Ujani reservoir backwaters in Indapur. The raid was carried out at Kalthan No. 2 on November 27, where officials found large-scale cultivation of African mangur (Clarias gariepinus), a species banned in India since 1997 for its invasive nature and ecological risks. The seized stock was destroyed after the action. Assistant commissioner of fisheries Archana Shinde led the operation along with the fishery development officer and field staff. To confirm the species, the department sought help from experts at the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS). A team headed by Unmesh G Katwate, who leads BNHS's Wetland Eco-Restoration and Fisheries Development Programme, verified the catch as African mangur. The team also collected water samples from the site for evidence…...

Early signs of clam recovery in Ashtamudi after CMFRI's stock boost
1+ day, 2+ hour ago (387+ words) Kollam (Kerala), Nov 29 (PTI) A year after the ICAR'Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) launched an ambitious stock enhancement programme in Ashtamudi lake, early signs of recovery in the short-neck clam (Paphia malabarica) population have begun to show. Field monitoring data indicate evidence of spatfall and a marginal rise in standing stock, a CMFRI statement said on Saturday. Considering the spawning and early growth phase of the resource, CMFRI has recommended imposing a three-month fishery closure from December 1 to protect the clam during this critical period, it said. The encouraging signs emerged after the institute released three million hatchery-produced seeds of the clam from its Vizhinjam Regional Centre into the lake last year under the leadership of Dr M K Anil, Principal Scientist of CMFRI. Sock depletion of this clam had been reported in Ashtamudi following the 2018 deluge and associated…...
Government shutdown delays Mi'kmaq fish hatchery expansion
1+ day, 3+ hour ago (628+ words) The completion of a substantial expansion to a Mi'kmaq-run fish hatchery in Aroostook County has been delayed until at least June of 2026 because of the U.S. government shutdown this fall." The 9,000-square-foot hatchery, which is primarily funded through a U.S. Economic Development Administration grant, was slated to be completed this month, Mi'kmaq Farms Manager Mike Smith said." But the shutdown delayed the release of federal funding, and as the Caribou-based farm waits for that money, construction has stalled." "You've just got to play the game with the government," Smith said. "There's nothing you can do about it." When finished, the facility will quadruple the tribe's footprint to raise brook trout from its current 3,000-square-foot hatchery. The expansion will feature four roughly 20,000-gallon tanks, a significant step up from the two 16,000-gallon tanks in the existing space." It will also allow the Mi'kmaqs…...

The great outdoors from Pontian to Desaru, nostalgia for the way things were, shopping and, of course, good food.
