Revisiting Jill of the Jungle, the last game Tim Sweeney designed
2+ hour, 21+ min ago (956+ words) DOS platformers didn't have a reputation for being fun, but this one is a blast. Twice a month, we'll publish a personal retrospective like this one, where we'll feature one of the games from the list'perhaps a retro game you've heard of, perhaps a modern title you missed. Regardless, GOG will have a DRM-free version of the game ready to go. Be sure to check out the earlier pieces in the series! Boy, was 1992 a different time for computer games. Epic MegaGames' Jill of the Jungle illustrates that as well as any other title from the era. Designed and programmed by Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney, the game was meant to prove that console-style games of the original Nintendo era could work just as well on PCs. (Later, the onus of proof would often be in the reverse direction.) As…...

The Brilliant Mind and the Breaking Point: Chess’s Hidden Human Cost
6+ hour, 31+ min ago (1044+ words) The celebrated world of competitive chess is sustained by prodigious talent but shadowed by emotional strain. From Morphy to Naroditsky, the game reveals how genius and fragility often travel together. Behind the clean geometry of the board lies a harsher truth about pressure, isolation, and the toll of brilliance. The pride and sorrow of chess Published : Nov 30, 2025 13:30 IST - 6 MINS READ For all its appearance of sedentary serenity, stripped down, chess is a brutal sport, more so when played at the highest competitive level. Though an ancient game of enormous elegance, subtlety and sophistication, it is not for the faint-hearted. To put the argument in context, one need only recall the chilling answer of the 11th World Chess Champion Bobby Fischer (1943-2008) when asked what gave him pleasure in chess: "I like the moment when I break a man's ego." Chess is a…...

A walking lighthouse and a bird: 'Keeper' is a surreal, unique game
8+ hour, 31+ min ago (345+ words) Sunday, 30 Nov 2025 BERLIN:A lighthouse wanders through a deserted landscape filled with crooked plants, dilapidated buildings and glowing mushrooms. A green bird with a wooden beak is perched on the lighthouse. Together they trudge along an undefined path while not a word is spoken. There's no question: Keeper, from Double Fine Productions, is a strange game. One could somewhat dismissively call it a "walking simulator" because above all, you walk through an enchanting and strange world where there are no longer any humans, but all sorts of peculiar creatures. The inspiration for the game partly stemmed from the Covid pandemic, explains studio head Tim Schafer. During the lockdown the game's lead developer, Lee Petty, took to taking long walks. "He did a lot of hiking in the hills around his house. He was very inspired by nature, the solitude and…...

Experience the best Star Wars inspired TTRPG for only $5 this Black Friday
10+ hour, 19+ min ago (216+ words) Ironsworn: Starforged is the best Star Wars roleplaying game that's not actually Star Wars, and for a price even Watto can't complain about Ironsworn: Starforged takes everything people loved about Ironsworn and improves upon it, from lore to mechanics. For those unfamiliar with the Ironsworn system, the original rulebook is totally free on the official website. Simply put, Ironsworn is a narrative-first game. Rules exist to guide the experience, but unlike something crunchier such as D&D 5e books, they never overpower the story. It's so story-focused, in fact, that there are even rules for co-op and solo play, so everyone can join in as players. A side benefit of this is that Starforged is fast to start up. While modular at its heart, Starforged does expand on its lore a bit more than its predecessor. Namely, the galaxy of Starforged…...
One of the best Warhammer books is getting a deluxe reprint
10+ hour, 57+ min ago (307+ words) Trollslayer's about to get the hardcover treatment it deserves. They were a perfect encapsulation of Warhammer, grim but also a bit silly, heroic but also earthy. Eventually they'd get their own novels, but first they appeared in a compilation of short stories called Trollslayer. Honestly, I don't think the Felix and Gotrek stories worked as well once they were expanded out to novel length. With a few exceptions, almost all of their best adventures were short stories like those collected in Trollslayer, which is why I'm interested in the special edition Games Workshop recently announced. The hardcover book comes with a bookmark shaped like an axe, art prints including a map of the Old World and a wanted poster for the book's ostensible heroes, two coins'a gold crown from Felix's home of the Empire, and a silver dwarf coin for…...
