Wriggling Reeves says OBR downgrades to blame for her Budget tax hikes

1+ hour, 8+ min ago (1450+ words) Rachel Reeves'had to be asked twice whether she 'lied' to Britain about the choices she faced in the Budget today. Amid rising fury at the way she softened up the public for monster tax hikes, the Chancellor initially dodged a straight question before insisting she had not deliberately misled anyone.' She insisted OBR's downgrades were to blame for her decisions - even though the watchdog had in fact been informing her privately that there was no structural black hole in the finances. Ms Reeves spent weeks before the fiscal package was unveiled talking up how the independent body had found a huge black hole in the books. However, it has emerged that the OBR told her as long ago as September that productivity downgrades were being offset by better tax revenues.' In fact by the end of October Budget forecasts were…...

'Of course I didn't' lie about state of public finances, Chancellor Rachel Reeves insists to Sky News

1+ hour, 22+ min ago (321+ words) Sunday 30 November 2025 08:50, UK The chancellor has insisted to Sky News that she did not lie to the public about the state of the public finances ahead of the budget. Rachel Reeves is facing widespread accusations that in a speech from Downing Street on 4 November in which she laid the groundwork for tax rises, she lied about the state of the public finances. Asked directly by Sky's Trevor Phillips if she lied, she said: "Of course I didn't." Ms Reeves said the decision by the independent Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) to review and downgrade productivity meant that the forecast for tax receipts was "16bn lower than expected, and said she needed tax rises to create more fiscal headroom to reassure the financial markets and create stability in the economy. But coupled with other changes in the fiscal forecast, the chancellor knew…...

Downing Street confirmed on Saturday night the Prime Minister was happy with the speech. In it, Ms Reeves warned that poor productivity would have "consequences for the public finances" - while families would need to "do their bit" to plug the gap. PDP demands withdrawal of Tinubu’s ambassadorial list over integrity concerns

1+ hour, 25+ min ago (193+ words) The party argued that many of the nominees have questionable integrity and political reputations, which could undermine Nigeria's diplomatic standing both domestically and internationally. According to the PDP, appointing individuals with contentious public records sends the wrong signal ahead of future elections and constitutes a serious breach of public trust. It added, "To this end, we demand that President Bola'Tinubu'withdraw the said list and'renominate'only those with stellar democratic credentials and high moral standing, capable of commanding global respect for the ambassadorial assignments." The PDP also criticized the'nearly three-year'delay in compiling the ambassadorial list, calling it evidence of a lack of excellent people at the President's disposal. The party warned that sending ambassadors with tainted political profiles to'represent'Nigeria abroad could seriously undermine the country's reputation on the international stage and negatively affect diplomatic engagements. This development follows an earlier batch of…...
